Colombia’s three clocks
Three different day counts apply to foreigners in Colombia. People often mix them up. Enter your stays to see each count. Your dates stay in your browser.
Tourist permit: 90 and 180 days
The entry permit is valid for up to 90 calendar days. Extensions cannot take the total past 180 calendar days in the same calendar year. Request an extension no later than 5 business days before the permit ends.
Migración Colombia: extensionForeigner ID card: 15 days
Holders of a visa valid for more than 3 months request the foreigner ID card within 15 calendar days of entering Colombia. If the visa was granted in Colombia, the 15 days count from the day it was issued. Visitor (V) visas are exempt.
Migración Colombia: foreigner ID cardTax residency: 183 days
A person in Colombia for more than 183 calendar days within any 365 consecutive days is a tax resident. The count includes entry and exit days. The visa type does not decide it.
Estatuto Tributario art. 10
These counts use your dates and the published rules. Migración Colombia and the tax office (DIAN) keep the official records. Confirm your dates with them, and ask a licensed professional about your case.
Interested in a kit for newcomers?
We are considering one. It would have checklists, letters in Spanish and a calendar of deadlines. Join the email list for news.
